The year was 1980, I was in my last year of high school, just turned 16 I managed to get my hands on an American BMX magazine, not an easy feat in England at the time. I promptly typed up a letter to every BMX company advertising in that publication, telling them why I’d be a good candidate as the UK distributor for their brand. Chuck from Robinson Racing replied and Alans BMX was up and running.
In Easter 1981, my parents and my Dave Arnold (who co-produced this) flew to California and Chuck took us on a tour of the So. Cal BMX industry… Bob Osbourn at BMX Action magazine, Bob Haro, Premier helmets, A’ME grips, Vans and the Johnson family at Torker. I came back from that trip as the UK distributor for Robinson, Torker, Haro, Premier and A’ME.
BMX was about to explode and we were ready.
At the end of that first year I ended up UKBMX National number ‘1’, with no less than nine other riders on Robinson and Torker in the top three in their respective age groups.
Fast forward to the start of 2026. I got thinking about doing something to mark our 45 year anniversary. Then - after working on various collaborative projects over the intervening years — I spoke with Dave Arnold about this film idea I had and we headed to Bangor in Northern Ireland to meet with film maker, Peter Adam and Will Smyth from DIG magazine. We wanted to celebrate BMX and rather than do a documentary, decided to recreate all the ‘historical’ scenes from scratch. We also wanted to include as many of our current riders in this for both the retro and modern scenes and include all the varied aspects of BMX we cover today, from Flatland to Racing. For the racing we ended up putting on a Pro-Am race that attracted top-class racers including World Champion Beth Shriever.
Over those 45 years I’ve seen many ups and downs in BMX, but we wanted to tap into the pure feeling that BMX gave us when we first encountered it. The purpose of the film is to hopefully remind you of that feeling.
The trailer will debut at the British BMX Hall of Fame on 7th November and simultaneously on Youtube and Instagram, with a December release. We’re also working on a “Making Of” and a publication to go with it, due in 2027.
I’d like to thank everyone involved in this project and I can’t wait for you all to see it.
